How can you use smartpens to become more efficient?

Smartpens are a new office trend with ever-expanding possibilities. The features of smartpens have grown a lot since the technology first came about, and they’re still expanding.

What many smartpens do is capture the notes that you are writing down and convert them into a digital format.   Additional capabilities vary by brand and model.   Here is some information about some of the models that are available today.

    IOGEAR Mobile Digital Scribe

This smartpen was the first on the scene. For that reason, it doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles that you might find in a newer model.

It captures and stores everything you write and doesn’t call for a special notepad or piece of paper.  This makes it especially easy to upload your notes to your computer.  If you already have the Mobile Digital Scribe linked to your computer it will automatically transfer any text and drawings directly to the screen.

    Logitech IO2 Digital Pen

The Logitech IO2 Digital Pen executes most of the basic functions that you can find on IOGEAR’s pen. Once you transcribe your notes, you are able to save them in a number of different formats and file types.

You can then search for words and phrases by date, file type, or file name. You can add items to your calendar merely by writing them down.  The Logitech IO2 Digital Pen doesn’t work on any surface like the IOGEAR pen, but it works with Post-It notes and Franklin Covey’s iScribe software and digital planning pages.

    Livescribe Echo

The Livescribe Echo has far more functions than its counterparts. It not only transcribes your written notes into a PDF, it also records any audio and lets you save that in a variety of different formats.

The coolest feature that you’ll find on the Echo is the Pencast functionality.  A Pencast allows you to play back the audio and synchronize it with your notes, making it much simpler to keep a detailed record of your thoughts without writing down everything.  Apple has also built a free app that allows for easy sharing and replaying.

All of these pens are excellent for their own reasons and they can really help you become more efficient in the office.  You’ll never be forced to remember the tiny details of a meeting again.

Gmail Motion – just how awesome is it?

The Internet has been abuzz today about the newest feature release from Google.  It is called Gmail Motion and it’s Google’s most recent attempt to keep up with the ever-evolving technology of the Internet and email.

With Gmail Motion, you can now carry out a number of actions in your Gmail account with a variety of gestures. Simple actions like search, forward, reply and mark as unread can all be executed with gestures, instead of the click of a mouse. This makes users feel more in touch with both their email and their computers and makes for an overall more pleasant email experience.

    How does it work?

Gmail Motion integrates your computer’s built-in webcam with Google’s new, patented spatial tracking technology. Basically, your webcam tracks your movements and interprets them as Gmail specific commands.

How to use Gmail Motion safely

Of course, like any physical activity, there are a number of precautions that should be taken in order to protect against injury. You should make sure that there are no fragile objects around you that can be damaged. It is easy to get excited about the new technology and make fast movements, which can result in serious injury if you end up hitting something. It is also important to take breaks every 30 to 40 minutes and stretch in between sessions, so you don’t strain yourself.

If this seems like something you’d like to try, check out the Gmail Motion website. It has a printable Motion Guide that fills you in on all of the possible gestures and what they mean. The possibilities with this new technology are endless. As for business users who are looking forward to using the Motion feature, they’re in luck – the Gmail Motion technology will soon be coming to Google Docs.

This spatial tracking technology from Google is outstanding – it could potentially change the way we all work and interact with our computers on a regular basis. To some people, this announcement may seem kind of silly, and it is. Gmail Motion is just the latest of Google’s yearly April Fools’ jokes.

    Happy April Fools’ Day!

Some of the best ideas to come out of SXSW so far

    Bookmark and Share

by MTS on Mar 16, 2011

South by Southwest (SXSW) is a yearly event that brings together people from film, music and new media.  SXSW is all about creative content, and that is never lacking.  SXSW is most well-known for its music festival – it is one of the largest in the United States, but it has so much more to offer.

SXSW Interactive is one of the primary conferences at SXSW that encompasses all of the new media, and it has already unearthed some great ideas.  Although the SXSW Technology Summit, which is full of great ideas and presentations on technology and business, has just begun, some standout startups have already emerged.

Every year, SXSW includes a “Startup Bus” competition.  The Startup Bus takes off from 5 cities: Chicago, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Cleveland.  These buses are bound for Austin, and take two days to get there.  Within those 48 hours, teams are formed and they are tasked with coming up with a startup idea and then creating a website and prototype.  They then present their idea to a panel of judges when they reach Austin.

48 hours may not seem like much time, but it’s plenty for these teams.  There were many great ideas that people came up with – so many that the panel of judges couldn’t choose just one winner.  These are the two startups that came up with standout ideas and won the competition.

    TripMedi

TripMedi focuses on the world of medical tourism, which is growing surprisingly fast.  Medical tourism is a phrase used to describe the process of traveling to a developing nation to save money on medical procedures, both elective and non-elective.

The industry is growing by 15% yearly, so a comprehensive system for finding services is imperative.  Calling itself the “Yelp for medical tourism,” TripMedi hopes to become a one-stop-shop for the industry.

People can now go to one place to find a list of locations, doctors, and procedures and pricing available, making the process far less scary.  With 1,300 unique visitors and 44 sign-ups in just four days, TripMedi is sure to do well.

    WalkIN

WalkIN looked to solve a problem that everyone can relate to – waiting for a table at a restaurant.   We all know how annoying it is to cram into a restaurant lobby waiting for your name to be called.

With WalkIN, you can come in, scan a QR code to put your name on the list, and then go for a stroll, to get a drink next door, or whatever else you may like.  You will be alerted on your phone once your name has been called.

This is a big improvement from many restaurant pagers that are large and chunky and only work within a certain radius.

As these startups demonstrate, SXSW is a melting pot of innovative thinkers and always produces exceptional ideas.  There are bound to be more fascinating ideas emerging from SXSW, so stay tuned.
