Samsung Solid State Hard DriveFlash storage is something that is prevalent in many of our everyday lives, whether we realize it or not. Plenty of the devices we use on a daily basis (such as smartphones, Cisco routers, digital cameras & laptops) have flash storage built in.

    What exactly is flash storage?

Flash storage devices are frequently used to store and transport data, usually from one computer to another. Flash memory is known as a solid state storage device, which means everything is electronic instead of mechanical, like a data CD.

Other primary features of flash storage include:

    • A non-volatile storage chip, meaning it doesn’t need a constant flow of power to maintain the information stored in the chip
    • There are no moving parts
    • Data can be easily erased and the device can be reprogrammed over and over
    • Allows for quick access to data
    • Extreme durability, especially when coming in the form of a memory card

All of these features make flash storage a popular choice, especially for portable devices, such as cell phones. Many people use their smartphones or iPods as external hard drives by hooking them up to their computers and transferring data to them. This makes for extremely easy access, as these are devices that many people carry with them at all times.

We’ve all seen the frightening warning icon that pops up on an iPod when you plug it into your computer. It warns that if you disconnect it, something awful will happen. So, just how dangerous is it to unplug a USB device without properly “ejecting” it first?

Although practically anyone will tell you that you should always properly eject the device, most of us have simply unplugged a USB device without causing any damage. So, just what are the risks?

One of two things may happen if you remove the device before ejecting it:

    1. Nothing. Your data will remain undamaged and you will cause no harm to the USB device or to the computer
    2. The device can become corrupted, along with all its contents. This is sometimes reparable, but can be incredibly frustrating nonetheless

Although many people can just unplug their devices without inflicting any damage, it is still best to eject it first to avoid the inconvenience of lost data that is always a possible consequence.

For a guide to quickly and easily ejecting your gadgets check out this article.
